Johnny U. Kitchens was raised in Trion, Georgia, a small East Georgia cotton-mill town. When he was 14, his family moved across state and settled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia where he attended and graduated from Tallullah Falls High School in 1969. In September 1969, Johnny joined the Army, traveling the world as an Airborne paratrooper until his retirement on December 1, 2000.
During his more than 30-year Army career, Johnny served with some of the ArmyÂs most elite forces. After his arrival to Fort Bragg, his service to the Army included being an Administrative Assistant to the XVIII Airborne Corps Commanding General, Non-commissioned Officer in Charge of the 82d Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps Secretaries of the General Staff; the Special Security Officer for 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta; Sergeant Major, Secretary of the General Staff, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg; and as Inspector General Sergeant Major, US Army Southern European Task Force, Italy. status for 22 years, earned three foreign jump wing awards, and was Military Free-Fall qualified. In addition to his many awards and decorations, Sergeant Major Johnny Kitchens was awarded the Legion of Merit upon retirement. Johnny continues to serve his country proudly as a Department of the Army civilian as a Strategic Planner and Management Analyst in the Business Operations Division of the Directorate of Plans, Training and Mobilization, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Johnny enjoys the outdoors and has several hobbies. He is a professional archer that has earned titles as the 1994 National Champion, Italian 3-D Archery Federation, Modena Italy, third place in the Georgia State ASA Field Archery Championship in 1996, and first place in the NC ASA State Championship in 2000 and 2001. He enjoys collecting natural gemstones, cutting opal, and making jewelry; however, his favorite outdoor sport is fishing. Johnny currently fishes local, regional, and national bass tournaments with the American Bass Anglers and was ranked fifth overall in his district during 2006.
Johnny has been married to Deborah, also from Georgia, for more than 34 years, has one child, Rebecca, and three dogs, Chelsea, Sweat Pea, and Sunsynne.
